Lately, I’ve been diving in headfirst into memoirs—specifcally audiobook memoirs. There’s something about listening to someone narrate their own story that is just a force all its own, and completely different than reading the words on a page and trying to recall the author’s voice. Perhaps it’s the millennial in me, always chasing a high that a good podcast can bring about. I digress.
I take my measly Spotify audiobook time each month and spend that mystical currency on these audiobooks. Here are a few I’ve truly enjoyed over the last 6+ months with a couple of notes included. If you’re looking for a good audiobook memoir to get lost in, please consider some of these goodies:
Cher: The Memoir, Part 1
Written by Cher | Narrated by Cher & Stephanie J. Block
I. love. Cher. Hearing her telling of her beginnings is such a treat and she really does not hold back. Excited for part two this year!
Over the Influence: A Memoir
Written & Narrated by Joanna Levesque
I was an OG JoJo fan and bought her debut album in 2004 at the ripe age of 12. I’ll never forget pouring over the CD sleeve and getting acquainted with her music. SO much I did not know about her journey. Another candid telling of a life.
The Third Gilmore Girl
Written & Narrated by Kelly Bishop
Gilmore Girls is integral to who I am as a person, so this was required listening. It was interesting to hear about the real person behind Emily Gilmore, which ended up being nothing like the character at all in the most delightful way.
The House of Hidden Meanings
Written & Narrated by RuPaul
RuPaul….need I say more? Hilarious. Heartbreaking. REAL REAL REAL. The performance comes through strong and the delivery is unlike any other audiobook I’ve heard. One billion stars.
Here are a few that I’m adding to my TBLT (to be listened to) list:
Rebel Girl: My Life as a Feminist Punk - Kathleen Hanna
Love, Pamela: A Memoir of Prose, Poetry, and Truth - Pamela Anderson
The Friday Afternoon Club: A Family Memoir - Griffin Dunne
Tell Me Everything - Minka Kelly
Thanks for listening.
